Community Empowerment for Sustainable Forest Management in Sumatra
Sustainable forest management in Sumatra cannot be achieved without the meaningful involvement of local communities. Forest landscapes are not only ecological systems but also living spaces where communities depend on natural resources for their livelihoods, cultural identity, and long-term well-being. Recognizing this reality, Palka Agra Hayati Foundation places community empowerment at the core of its conservation approach.
Working in the RIMBA Corridor Ecosystem
Operating primarily in the RIMBA Corridor Ecosystem across Riau, Jambi, and West Sumatra, Palka Agra Hayati works to strengthen the role of communities as key actors in forest stewardship. Through a landscape-based and evidence-driven approach, the foundation supports initiatives that balance biodiversity protection with sustainable livelihood development.
Integrating Science and Local Wisdom
Community empowerment, as practiced by Palka Agra Hayati, goes beyond participation. It involves enhancing local capacities, strengthening institutions, and ensuring that communities have access to knowledge, resources, and decision-making processes related to forest management. By integrating scientific insights with local wisdom, conservation strategies become more relevant, inclusive, and effective at the ground level.
Strengthening Local Natural Resource Governance
One of the key focuses of Palka Agra Hayati’s work is improving natural resource governance at the local level. This includes supporting participatory land-use planning, strengthening community-based forest management systems, and fostering collaboration between communities, local authorities, and other stakeholders. Such collaborative governance is essential to address deforestation, land-use conflicts, and ecosystem degradation.
Linking Forest Conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods
Equally important is the link between forest conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Palka Agra Hayati promotes livelihood strategies that are environmentally responsible and economically viable, helping communities reduce dependency on destructive practices while improving their resilience to economic and climate-related pressures. These efforts contribute to both forest protection and social–ecological justice.
Looking Ahead: A Just and Sustainable Future
Entering 2025, Palka Agra Hayati Foundation continues to refine its strategy by aligning local action with national and global conservation agendas. Guided by ethical, inclusive, and collaborative values, the foundation remains committed to realizing long-term, just, and sustainable change—where forests are protected, and communities thrive alongside nature.
